Guess who tied for the single largest individual campaign contribution to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in 2006? The Nelnet student loan corporation's top three executives. Guess which company provided the single, largest corporate donation to the NRCC? Yup, Nelnet. Not a pharmaceutical company or tobacco company or oil company. Nope, a student loan company.

Missouri Board Chair Resigns

State loan agency Board members are dropping like flies in Missouri. The Chair of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA) Board resigned last week, making her the fourth Board member to resign since mid-September. Those resignations come on top of Executive Director Michael Cummins, who was pushed out in January 2006.

Partisan politics has taken firm hold of a pending major sale of student loans aimed at financing $350 million worth of Missouri college construction. Republican Governor Matt Blunt is hot to trot for the pending three part deal. Democrat Attorney General Jay Nixon has been throwing the kitchen sink at it.
