Commotion OpenWRT Developer, Open Technology Initiative

The New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative seeks a Technologist to join
our team in Washington, D.C., building a new device-as-infrastructure communications
tool for democratic organizing, civil society, and free speech in the 21st century (http://commotionwireless.net). The right candidate has at least 3+ years of professional programming experience, with preference given to those with experience developing for embedded Linux platforms. A thorough understanding of wireless networking technology and IP networking and routing is a must. Experience with dynamic web interface development, embedded Linux development, GSM networks, Lua, Python, and radio engineering principles are also desired. Strong preference will be given to developers who are already experienced with open-source community wireless networks and/or open-source mobile development.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain open source wireless mesh networking technologies.
  • Help shape the planning, development, and implementation of OTI’s technical projects.
  • Facilitate the growth of online communities around open source projects.
  • Collaborate with OTI’s internal developers and project partners.
  • Serve as a technical resource to OTI staff and key decision makers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional programming experience.
  • Experience with OpenWRT Linux.
  • Experience in load testing, benchmarking, performing QA, and code auditing softwareapplications.
  • A thorough understanding of networking systems including TCP/IP and 802.11 wireless.
  • Strong knowledge of encryption and network security techniques.
  • Comfortable working in UNIX-like environments such as Linux.
  • Effective organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate in a fast-paced environment.
  • A meticulous, self-motivated, and friendly nature.
  • Experience with Asterisk and other comparable open-source telephony and VOIP technologies.
  • Experience with deployment of community- and metro- scale wireless networks, particularly utilizing unlicensed bands.
  • Experience engaging communities in on-the-ground organizing efforts both in the United States and abroad.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
  • Experience developing applications for Android and/or iPhone.
  • A working knowledge of radio engineering.
  • Experience leading technical projects involving independent consultants.
